Andrew Adkins Wins 2016/17 Rising Star Series

By Julieanne Horsman

When Andrew Adkins lined up in the 25th and final heat of the Rising Star Series at Hawkesbury, he already had the competition in the bag.

No other jockeys in the race were within striking distance so even if he came last, the trophy was still going home with him.

The young hoop had been in contention for most of series but took the lead in round 23 at Newcastle with a third place run aboard Drill Master for Noel Mayfield-Smith. He piloted the same horse to second place in the final heat, to finish six points clear of runner-up Mikayla Weir.

Brock Ryan had the winning mount, How Sweet It Is, and although he earned maximum points, he had only competed in five heats prior and finished the series in equal sixth place.

Andrew Adkins is poised to also win the Metropolitan NSW Apprentice Jockey Premiership, and if he does, he will be following in the footsteps of another former Ron Quinton apprentice, Sam Clipperton. Sam won both the Rising Star Series and the NSW Metropolitan Apprentice Premiership in 2013/14.

The Rising Star Series is held each year to give apprentice jockeys more opportunities and exposure.
